Cost of cleaning Cost of cleaning seed charged by seed cleaner.
Cost of seed analysis Cost of seed testing. Prices vary with level of quality testing. $100 to $200/test. Ave cost for 320 bu. = $0.47/bu.
Screening losses Grade loss on screenings – Calculate expected clean-out and deduct expected loss from screenings.
Cost of freight Cost of moving grain and screenings to and from cleaning facility.
Cost of handling and storage Cost of manpower and equipment for handling of grain, seed and screenings plus added cost of seed storage/segregation and blending of screenings if applicable.
Cost of money and product quality risk Carrying cost to hold over product along with ongoing risk of quality retention.
Hassle factor to clean seed Attribute a cost for all your time and management to manage a farm saved seed lot. Take into account opportunity cost for time in this area verses other important activities or even holidays.
Added yield from improved seed quality (disease free, no preharvest, top germination & vigor) Calculate additional yield value for quality improvements of certified seed verses value of farm saved seed. Take the additional expected yield improvement per acre divided by number of bushels of seeding rate.
Increased yield from improved agronomics Calculate additional yield value for agronomic improvements of chosen Certified variety verses value of saved farm seed. Take the additional expected yield improvement per acre divided by number of bushels of seeding rate.
Added value from improved seed purity (weed & volunteer free) Calculate additional value per bushel for improved seed purity guaranteed by inspections via roging, rotations, isolations, sprays, equipment cleaning, etc verses value of farm saved seed.
Added value from improved operations and grain quality Calculate additional value per bushel from improved operations or grain quality from certified seed verses value of farm saved seed. For example, faster combining, earlier seeding/harvesting, improved protein, improved grade, etc.
Value of seed treatment What is the cost of your desired seed treatment? Do you require both fungicide and insect protection?
Hassle factor to treat seed Attribute a cost for your time and management to manage on farm seed treatment and overall seeding process.
Cost of certified seed Include the cost of a certified seed purchase. Include total cost of treatments if seed treatment values are included above.
